Samsung chases after Apple and LG with ViewFinity S9 display

Sticking with monitors at CES, Samsung’s new line-up for the show includes the ViewFinity S9 and it’s probably no accident that it looks very much like an Apple Studio Display.

It’s hard to look at the new Samsung ViewFinity S9 (Model Number: S90PC) and think anything other than it’s coming for Apple and LG’s lunch money. It features a 5K 27-inch screen and that 5,120 x 2,880 resolution not only has a wide colour gamut of 99% DCI-P3 but ships with a matte display to limit light reflection.

It has a built-in Color Calibration Engine to ensure precise control of screen colour and brightness, allowing users to adjust white balance, Gamma and RGB colour balance via their smartphones and the Samsung Smart Calibration application.

Connectivity is via USB-C and Thunderbolt 4, while it also comes with an external 4K SlimFit camera and supports native video conferencing through apps such as Google Meet that are included in the Samsung Smart Hub. And yes, that does mean it also has the company’s Tizen TV OS baked into its electronics, which means you can use it as a standalone TV if you really wish. It also rotates to portrait mode when required.

It looks cool and the spec is good, but what we don’t know yet is the pricing and any details of the availability beyond a vague ‘early this year’. It will be interesting to see how much it undercuts the Apple display, though, which starts at $1599 but is $2299 with the light scattering nano glass and a tilt *and* height adjustable stand. 

And just in case you’re after something different for the gamer in you, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Gaming Monitor (above) delivers 7680×2160 resolution and a 32:9 aspect ratio in one screen for what the company says is the first time. Its 1000R curved 57” screen runs at up to 240Hz and uses quantum mini LED technology with VESA Display HDR 1000 specification.

It also boasts the world’s first DisplayPort 2.1 support, which transfers data approximately twice as fast as the previously used DisplayPort 1.4 and allows lossless Display Stream Compression to transmit information without distortion.
