The well-regarded FilmConvert Nitrate film emulation and grain suite gets a new halation tool as from next week.
Releasing on November 20, Halation will be sold as an add-on to FilmConvert Nitrate licenses for $59, or as part of a new license purchase.
Halation is a by-product that comes from shooting on film, and one that helps add to the dreamy and romantic feeling that comes with shooting on celluloid. Halation occurs when bright parts of an image gain a red glow or ‘halo’, most commonly seen around strong light sources. And while this isn’t necessarily an effect that one can shoot for, it’s thought of as a desired effect that can help soften your overall image.
Here's a comparison between an image shot a) on film and then b) digitally with the Halation applied.
“We’ve been working hard to create truly authentic halation, which accurately mimics how halation occurs on film. We've meticulously traced the light coming through in your image to determine where halation should occur and how it affects your image to create an effect that is seamless and beautiful.”
Primary controls in FilmConvert allow users to adjust the sensitivity, strength, hue, and softness of the halation on an image. They can then dive further in with additional settings, to tailor the halation and add that extra detail to their images.
