Apple is building an ecosystem for its Vision Pro headsets, and Alteon’s support for the format signposts an exciting new future for the creative workflow.
We know that when Apple releases a major new product like its forthcoming Vision Pro headsets, it usually has an ecosystem/ platform to support it. Think of iTunes with the iPod and the App Store with the iPhone. And with the news in early November that iPhone 15 Pro users will be able to access MV-HEVC spatial video on their devices with iOS 17.2, we are beginning to see early partners step up to provide that ecosystem.
Such as alteon.io for example….
In a very interesting move that builds on its growing reputation in the digital content creation space, Alteon.io has announced its latest feature: support for MV-HEVC spatial video. This cutting-edge addition has the potential to redefine creative workflows for content creators, offering an immersive and dynamic media production experience. What do we mean by that?
MV-HEVC (Multiview High-Efficiency Video Coding) is a progressive video codec extension capable of delivering multiview video coding, including 3D depth views, with exceptional visual quality and up to 50% bitrate savings compared to its predecessors. Pretty cool, huh? By integrating MV-HEVC spatial video support, we believe Alteon is not only embracing the future of video technology but is also positioning itself at the forefront of the immersive video revolution. This will be a big thing in 2024 (more on that in another article coming soon), mark my words.
Integrating MV-HEVC spatial video into Alteon's platform, which I would define as a cloud desktop for creators, aligns with the latest advancements in immersive video technology, which seeks to transcend traditional media formats, offering more lifelike, interactive experiences. 3D+ basically.
"Today's announcement is more than just a technological advancement; it's a testament to our commitment to empowering creators in this rapidly evolving digital landscape," said Matt Cimaglia, Co-Founder and CEO of Alteon.io. "By supporting MV-HEVC spatial video, we are not only keeping pace with the industry's progress but are also providing our users with the tools they need to explore new dimensions of creativity and collaboration."
This announcement comes at the end of a highly productive year for Alteon. The platform's remarkable journey in 2023 included the release of an enhanced iPad app, supporting offline/online editing workflows and seamlessly connecting Final Cut Pro workflows across iPad and macOS. Additionally, Alteon expanded its capabilities to support augmented reality (AR) projects, allowing users to store, view, and collaborate on USDZ and other 3D formats, further cementing its position as a leader in cloud-based creative workflows. We’ve been following them and will continue to do so.
Once the video is in Alteon's cloud environment, collaboration is key. Collaborators on a project can access this content seamlessly regardless of location. They can comment on the footage, providing valuable real-time feedback and suggestions. Additionally, they can engage in remote editing, a feature that significantly enhances the flexibility and efficiency of the production process. This remote editing and commenting are facilitated by the cloud-based nature of Alteon, which houses the footage securely and allows for simultaneous access by multiple users. Frame.io pioneered this shared/ remote workflow technology, and it's great to see some serious alternatives out there now.
With this new feature, Alteon is set to offer a new type of creative experience, allowing users to upload content directly from iPhone to Alteon via the native iOS app and collaborate effortlessly with other creatives, clients, and stakeholders. This development highlights Alteon's commitment to enhancing the creative process, making it more efficient, collaborative, and boundary-pushing.
As we look towards 2024 and beyond, we will start seeing more tools like this to serve the avalanche of content that will be created from iPhone 15 Pro (and future iPhones) users. It's great to see the higher end of those users who require media management and shared workflows looked after.
