Sony rolls out PDT-FP1 portable 5G data transmitter worldwide

We got an exclusive glimpse of the new Sony PDT-FP1 portable data transmitter during ISE 2024, and, after initially launching in Japan, it's now heading worldwide.

Sony has announced a new one-of-a-kind dedicated portable data transmitter, the PDT-FP1, that allows high-speed, low-latency video and still image data transport over 5G networks. When connected to a camera, the device comes in handy in scenarios demanding fast image capture to delivery, such as news or event photography and broadcast video production. Offering high-speed, low-latency, and reliable mobile data communication across 5G networks, it works in both outdoor and indoor environments (such as tradeshows) where WiFi connectivity is limited.

Supporting various domestic, international, and other 5G networks, the device ensures versatile data transfer capabilities. With a 6.1-inch OLED display and a cooling fan, it features the usual essential ports, including HDMI input, LAN port, USB Type-C port, USB Type-C charging terminal, and a mounting screw hole to integrate with a camera. Utilizing the Type-C charging terminal with an external power source, the PDT-FP1 can simultaneously stream and transfer data. It features a built-in memory of 8GB (RAM)/256GB (ROM) and supports microSDXC cards up to 1TB for efficient data processing and storage. 

The ‘Camera Wired Connection’ setting offers automatic file delivery to C3 Portal and Ci Media Cloud for improved workflows. It uses that 6.1-inch display to run a Network Visualiser package, allowing transfer status to be visibly monitored before and during shooting. Also, Sony says that low latency, low bit rate, and high-quality live streaming is possible via 5G connectivity by using the optional CBK-RPU7 and NXL-ME80 as a receiver

The PDT-FP1 looks to be getting a staggered rollout around the world. It's already available in Japan and is coming to Europe from May 2024 for around €1300 (pre-orders are open now). US pricing is looking like $1099 with availability closer to the summer months.
