Reports suggest that the manufacturing of the new $3,500 units in China has ramped up to full speed ahead of an Apple Vision Pro retail launch in the US in February.
The jury is frankly out and will be for some time about the new Apple Vision Pro VR/AR headset and whether it can kickstart a genuine interest in all things metaverse that the public has so far managed to studiously avoid. The tech certainly looks interesting, and the way Apple targets some of the apps and use cases at high-end users is cleverer than what we have seen so far, but that $3,500 pricetag is extremely spendy — even for a Pro audience.
My bet? I reckon it won’t be until the tech can trickle down to a bog-standard Apple Vision that we’ll really know if the public appetite for such a headset exists. But either way, we’re going to get a clearer vision soon as the Vision Pro could be in US shops at least as soon as February.
According to a report by the often very reliable Mark Gurman in Bloomberg, production in China has ramped up to full speed and has been going at that pace for several weeks now.
“The goal is for customer-bound units to be ready by the end of January, with the retail debut planned for the following month,” he writes.
Meanwhile, there is plenty of groundwork being done for all the other things that have to slot into place ahead of the launch, including training for select retail staff and a hurry-up email to developers to ensure their visionOS apps are ready in time to coincide with the launch.
And if all that wasn't enough to convince you, think of this. Super Bowl LVIII takes place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 11, 2024, and marks the 40th Anniversary of Ridley Scott’s famous 1984 ad that introduced the world to the Mac. That feels like a bit too much synchronicity to ignore…
