The new Canon CR-N100 4K PTZ lists at $1999

This is officially IBC catch-up week, where we step through all the stories that we didn't get to while the show was thundering around our ears. First out of the gate: Canon’s new CR-N100 PTZ camera.

PTZ cameras have really taken off in recent years, and have a wide variety of uses, including for live TV, streaming, a B-camera, and more. At IBC, Canon introduced a 4K PTZ camera dubbed the CR-N100 and priced it as an affordable option. Additionally, it also unveiled a flagship remote camera controller, the RC-IP1000.

CR-N100 4K PTZ features

Canon's newest PTZ (Pan, Tilt, and Zoom), the CR-N100 has plenty of great features that anyone from YouTubers and broadcasters to those looking for a camera to film meetings will find very useful.

  • 1/2.3” CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV6 image processor platform.
  • 4K/30P crisp video.
  • 20x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 29.3mm to 601mm.
  • Fully manual controls of focus, exposure, and image settings.
  • Hybrid Auto Focus (AF) system with face detection and combines contrast AF with external phase-detection AF.
  • Four scene modes: Portrait, Sports, Low-Light, and Spotlight.
  • Canon's Auto Tracking app is an add-on option.
  • Multiple video interfaces and IP streaming protocols, including Canon XC2, NDI|HX4, SRT5, RTMP3/RTMPS and RTP/RTSP.
  • Multi-Camera Management Application (MCMA) controls and manages up to 200 individual camera units in large-scale camera systems.
  • HDMI and USB Video Class (UVC) supported.
  • $1999 price and available in early October 2023.

As mentioned earlier, PTZ cameras like Canon's 4K CR-N100 are great for YouTubers hosting a show; an option for live lectures, including at the university level; a broadcast sports, news, etc., company looking for an affordable remote camera option for their shows; live events; and more. You can even set one up at a sports field in the booth.

If you're a corporate video producer and shooter, these are great for filming meetings, especially if it's going out to the internet (connecting it to a computer via USB). It's also a decent camera B option, albeit probably a little pricier than a mirrorless camera being used with a cinema camera A option.

The Canon RC-IP1000 remote camera controller

Canon says the RC-IP1000 remote camera controller will feature direct functional buttons and dials placed in a way that makes it easy to use, plus a 7-inch touch panel. It will support serial and IP control (including HDMI), allowing for control of PTZ (Pan, Tilt, and Zoom) movements. It's also compatible with 12G-SDI input for 4K/60p.

Canon also says it's great for just about any production need and environment, such as remote production, live event streaming, broadcast, houses of worship, etc.

The Canon RC-IP1000 Remote Camera Controller will be available in mid-December 2023, but pricing has yet to be determined.

Summing it all up

The Canon PTZ 4K CR-N100 camera is terrific as a remote option for pretty much any scenario, especially if you're working alone or with a very small crew. The RC-IP1000 Remote Camera Controller is awesome for practically any production need. Learn more at Canon's site.
