Canon R3: More details and specs revealed

Back in April, Canon dropped a surprise with the announcement that it was developing a new, full-frame mirrorless camera called the R3.

It joins the popular R5 and R6 models, and some consider it this high-end mirrorless version of the EOS 1D X. Canon has now released further details of the R3.

Canon R3: What We Know So Far

In our first article, we highlighted the R3 specs that Canon had released at the time, which includes:

• A brand new full-frame, back-illuminated stacked 35mm CMOS sensor plus DIGIC X image processor. This will be a new sensor.
• More light sensitivity and even less concern over rolling shutter than the R5, which handles it very well.
• 30fps via the electronic shutter with AF and AE tracking.
• Dual Pixel CMOS AF, and includes a state-of-the-art Eye Control Autofocus Function (like in the R5 and R6).
• Rugged and weather-resistant design with a vertical grip.

Canon stated the R3 will "land between" the R5 and the EOS-1 D MK III DSLR, which is why a growing number of photographers and filmmakers believe it will be the 'mirrorless 1D X,' as mentioned above.

New R3 Details Revealed By Canon

Canon released a couple of new images of the R3 — the front and back — plus some new specs: 

• The 30fps shooting includes RAW and the new AF tracking.
• Oversampled 4K and internal RAW video recording, plus the ability to film in Canon Log 3 and object recognition. No word on if it will support 5.5K RAW filming like the 1D X MK III.
• Autofocus in very low light, including -7EV and lower (for stills).
• Track cars, motorbikes, and more (stills and video).
• The body will be constructed of magnesium alloy and weather- and dust-resistant, making it perfect for any kind of conditions when shooting outside.
• LP-E19 battery, as found in the EOS-1D X series of DSLRs.
• Accessory shoe that can power accessories and data communication.
• Built-in 5GHz WiFi and a wired LAN socket.
• Vari-Angle screen.

The only things Canon hasn't released are a release date and a price for the R3. But if it lines up with the 1D X series, it could cost between $6,000 and $6,500 USD (body only), putting it at the top end of their mirrorless cameras. The R5 body retails for $3899 USD.
