Angénieux has announced that its new full-frame Optimo Ultra Compact Zoom lenses are now shipping.
Two new models, a 37-102mm and a 21-56mm T2.9, complement the existing Optimo Ultra 12X and Optimo Prime series lenses. Not surprisingly, the new zooms are aimed at the higher end of things and are natural successors to the company's exceptionally well regarded Optimo 15-40 and 28-76mm lenses, which have been in use for over 15 years.
The new lenses were in fact announced in July at the Cannes Film Festival, so there's been a fairly short interval between initial announcement and shipping for glass of this tier.
Angénieux is one of those companies that we don't hear much about in all the noise of some of the other big players. But those who know, know. In fact out of 52 feature films presented at Cannes 2021, Angénieux glass was only beaten out by Cooke for the most commonly used lenses, beating out Zeiss, Canon, and ARRI. An Optimo zoom was used on eight of the features, with an HR zoom being utilised on one.
