Blackmagic Design yesterday released an update for its $345 Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 recording device enabling recording of Apple ProRes HQ files.

The original HyperDeck Shuttle supported 10-bit RAW recording in .mov format from SDI or HDMI sources to BMD-qualified SSD drives. The Shuttle 2 added Avid DNxHD 10-bit 220 Mbps in either .mov or Avid MXF wrappers.

Yesterday’s update adds Apple ProRes HQ in response to user requests.

Additionally, the update adds closed caption support for Shuttle 2 as well as the two Hypderdeck Studio models.

The new Apple ProRes HQ support means that users will be able to record to a visually-lossless format with a six-fold data storage saving over using uncompressed video.

Compact

Shuttle 2 is a compact external recorder with both SDI and HDMI i/o as well as internal battery for about an hour of recording. A power supply connector allows use of supplied AC adapter or external 12v to 18v batteries.

The device can be started/stopped either manually, by timecode through SDI or SDI signal detection. Pass-through monitoring via HDMI or SDI regardless of input source is possible.

An optional $100 cheeseplate back allows for a variety of mounting options but many users have simply opted for Velcro attachment to mounting plate or rig.

Simple

The unit is a simple recorder with only transport and power controls. Set up and codec selection is via a PC or Mac utility over a USB connection. The SSD itself must be formatted Mac OS X HFS+ meaning that Windows users must have a Mac utility installed on their systems. File transfer is accomplished by removing the SSD and utilizing a dock (not supplied).

At $345, the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 represents the least expensive path to offboard recording, now in three possible formats.

Current users may download the Hyperdeck 3.6 update which includes both the Apple ProRes ProRes codec as well as several bug fixes for free at www.decklink.com.
